Jorge Manuel Martins Barata

Full Professor of Aerospace Sciences, Faculty of Engineering, University of Beira Interior, Portugal.

He was a member of the Bylaws Assembly, member of the Assembly of the University, member of the Senate, President of the Post-Graduation Office of the Scientific Council of the University, President of the Pedagogic Council, President of the Pedagogical and Scientific Council of Engineering, Chairman of the Scientific Section,  of the Directing Council and of the Representatives Assembly of Engineering, Scientific Coordinator of the R&D Unit "Center for Science and Aerospace Technologies", Proponent and Director of Unit R&D AEROG - Aeronautics and Astronautics Research Center of LAETA – Associated Laboratory in Energy, Transports and Aeronautics, which is a member of the Executive Committee, Director of Undergraduate, Masters and PhD courses in Aeronautical Engineering of UBI and UBI representative in the Thematic Committee of Engineering of Portuguese Universities Foundation.

He was Teaching Assistant and Assistant Professor at the IST - Instituto Superior Técnico, Coordinator of the Center for Technical Support and Training of the IST Computer Centre, responsible for the Information Technology Laboratory of the Mechanical Engineering Department of IST, Vice President and President of the IST Computer Centre and Chief Executive Officer of the Group of Informatics of the Technical University of Lisbon.

He supervised 71 research students, including 18 fellowships (2 post-doctoral, 5 PhD and 2 science and technology management), 7 internships, 18 final-year projects and 2 undergraduate seminars, 1 program  of scientific aptitude and teaching skills, 14 master dissertations and 11 doctoral thesis. He authored more than 300 publications, including 61 articles in books or journals, 183 in international conferences, 14 educational monographs, 6 teaching texts, 8 books, and 27 other Communications in Seminars, Colloquia and Lectures. He received a Visiting Fellowship (1984-87), issued by the British Ministry of Defence, as well as a Window on Science Grant, awarded by the US Air Force.

Jorge Barata is a Fellow of the RAeS (Royal Aeronautical Society), member specialist in Aeronautical Engineering from the OE-Chartered Engineers Organization, SAE-American member of the Society of Automotive Engineers and Associate Fellow of AIAA-American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and was reviewer of American design CPSRS, Category 6 (Structures / Mechanical Systems , Fluid, Thermal, Propulsion, Aerodynamics) Subcommittee: Fluids (1998-2001) and several international journals and conferences, Associate Editor for Europe of the Journal of Aerospace Engineering, Editor of Atomization and Sprays and Managing Guest Editor of Fuel Processing Technology.

He was also Director General of the Centre for Science and Higher Education, Director General of Department of Assessment, Forecasting and Planning of the Ministry of Education, Member of the Portuguese National Statistical Council, member of the Coordinating Council for the Information Society of the Ministry of Information Education, member of the Unit of the Education Operational Intervention Management, representative of Portugal in various groups and projects of the European Union and OECD (National European Network Coordinator Information Eurydice, National representative for the INES Project of Statistical Indicators of Education and representative of Portugal in the Standing Group on Benchmarks and Indicators of the European Union), member of the Technical Support Group to participate in the Thematic Areas of the 7th Framework Programme (Item 7 of the Specific Programme Cooperation: Transport, including Aeronautics) of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Higher education, elected Delegate of OE of the Castelo Branco District, and proposer and member of the Executive Committee of the Specialization in Aeronautical Engineering OE.
